(7/16) Two Emmitsburg town positions, one executive, one legislative, will be up for grabs, or not, as the annual town election, set for September 30, approaches.
The seats to be filled in the upcoming election will be that of the mayor, presently held by Don Briggs, and a seat on the board of commissioners, presently held by Chris Staiger.
Both seats represent three-year terms.
Commission members are compensated $4,000 annually. The mayoral position is compensated at $8,000 annually.
To date, only Mayor Briggs has indicated he will run for reelection, while Staiger told the News-Journal that he will not be running for re-election.
Briggs defeated then-incumbent Mayor Jim Hoover in a 'surprise upset' in the 2011 election, the same election that incumbent Staiger was re-elected to the board of commissioners.
Staiger, who had been first elected to the board of commissioners in 2005, had also been serving as the board president when his seat came up for election.
Regarding the approaching election, Cathy Willets, Emmitsburg town clerk and administrative assistant, said that, to date, no prospective candidates have filed to run yet, but, 'The ad won't run for the election till the first week of August.'
By town code, candidates wishing to be listed on the printed election ballot must file 30 days prior to the election. Individuals interesting in becoming write-in candidates must file within 15 days of the election.
Specifically, candidates, she said, will have until August 31 for their names to appear on the ballot and noon on September 23 to qualify to run as a write-in.
The town is also seeking election judges for the upcoming September election. In accordance with the Emmitsburg Town Code, judges must be registered and qualified voters and not hold or be a candidate for any other Emmitsburg public officer.
