Carroll Valley 4th of July community events

(6/25) Carroll Valley Borough has several events planned to bring the community together.

The borough will host its longtime celebration of America’s birthday on Friday, July 4. Those wishing to celebrate Independence Day with their neighbors can begin gathering in Carroll Valley Commons on Fairfield Road at 5, Assistant Borough Manager Gayle Marthers said during June’s council meeting.

The event began in 2005 and the borough is touting this year’s celebration as "20 years of freedom, fireworks, and rockin’ tunes."

Parking in Carroll Commons is limited, Marthers said, so revelers should park at Liberty Mountain Resort, 78 Country Club Trail, and take a shuttle to the park. Marthers said Liberty Mountain is having its own celebration, so people can attend both.

Food trucks will be selling items in Carroll Commons. The Reagan Years, a 1980s music tribute band, will perform beginning at 6:30 until fireworks, sponsored by the borough and Liberty Mountain, light the sky at 9:45.

"I really think it is a banner day for us," Borough Manager Dave Hazlett said.

Those who attended last year may remember that much anticipation for the fireworks show ended in a small sizzle. Several rain delays ultimately led to the show being postponed for two days, sparking public ire. Hazlett said the call to postpone, if necessary, would be made early in the day this year.

Unfavorable weather conditions have caused challenges in hosting outdoor events in the past year.

"The good Lord has given us enough rain to sink small battleships," Marthers said.

A community-wide yard sale, originally scheduled for June 7, was rescheduled for June 14 due to rain. The alternate date was not any better, Marthers said, so the borough is hoping to reschedule the event for the fall.

The Independence Day Celebration and Community Yard Sale are two of several events the borough’s Parks and Recreation Committee host each year. Other events include Daddy/Daughter Dance, Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, and Santa’s Letters.

Also in June, the borough unanimously approved Jen Warden of Cypress Trail’s application to serve on the Parks and Recreation Committee. Warden said she, her husband, and her three-year-old son are frequent users of the parks. In her application, Warden noted an interest in giving feedback from a family perspective. She also has fundraising experience.
