5/24/2004 - On June 16, 2004, the Schriver House Museum
will offer an open house to Adams County residents. To celebrate the opening of
the newly renovated Schriver House Museum Shop, free tours of the 1860 home of
George and Hettie (Weikert) Schriver will be offered throughout the day for up
to two people per family.
Thirty-minute tours of up to twenty people will begin
every half-hour between 10 am and 5 pm. Reservations are not required but space
is limited. Refreshments will be served while guests browse the new Schriver
House Museum Shop located at 307 Baltimore Street in Gettysburg, next to the
Schriver House Museum. The Museum Shop offers a selection of fine gifts, civil
war related items such as jewelry, toys and books, and a small selection of
antiques.
The Schriver House Museum was painstakingly restored in
1996 by Del and Nancie Gudmestad. It is now open to the public as a heritage
museum. The tour offers a special insight into the lives of the people of
Gettysburg and how the battle and the Civil War affected them.
Built just a few months before the Civil War broke out,
Confederates set up a sharpshooters nest in the attic during the Battle of
Gettysburg. Live ammunition and medical supplies were discovered under the
attic floorboards during the restoration. The tour also gives a glimpse into
the lifestyles, customs, and furnishings of the 1860's.
The Schriver House Museum has earned numerous awards
including the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's Historic
Preservation Award.
The Museum has been used as a filming site for PBS, A&E
and The History Channel. For additional information on the Schriver House
