Thurmont Main Street Maryland board members are readying for town officials to hire a Main Street manager who could assume administrative duties and allow committee members to move forward with revitalization plans.
Main Street Maryland is a comprehensive downtown revitalization program established in 1998 by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The program strives to strengthen the economic potential of Maryland’s traditional main streets and
neighborhoods.
Thurmont Administrator Richard May said the town has received several applications for the town’s Main Street manager. Town officials will review the applications and later this year schedule interviews. A manager should be selected after the Christmas holiday
season, May said.
Also, volunteers for Thurmont’s new Main Street program last week participated in a two-day training course held by state Main Street Maryland officials that review the goals and requirements of the program.
The six volunteers — several of them members of the town’s economic development committee — learned about the four-point approach to strengthen their local economy and create a flourishing business district. The four pillars – design, organization, promotions and
economic restructuring – correspond with committees. The design and promotions committees have already been established in Thurmont.
