(11/15) It’s been nearly a year since
officials broke ground on the new Thurmont
Regional Library on East Moser Road and the
grand opening now looks as if it will be July
12, 2008.
“We’re ordering furniture and thinking about artwork,” said Thurmont
Librarian Erin Dingle during an update she gave the town commissioners.
The new library design includes elements reminiscent of Catoctin Furnace and
barns. The 25,000-square-foot library will have two meeting rooms, computers
and relaxing seating areas. Children will be able to enjoy the section of the
library designed just for them, which will have lots of colorful art, unique
furniture, plenty of computers and comfortable space to sit and read. There
will also be a special room just for programs and storytimes. Teens will also
have their own trendy space to choose books, use the computer and participate
in special program.
“The Lions Club has been banking money for about six years, $6,000, for a
handicapped-accessible workstation,” Dingle said.
Dingle also said that county library system has been buying new books for
the past couple years in preparation for the grand opening.
“We’re going to open with pretty much a brand new collection,” Dingle said.
Once the old library is sold, the town will be selling the old library
building. Thurmont is the only town in the county with its own town-owned
library.
The new library is expected to employ 30 people, five of whom will be
full-time. This is an increase from the one full-time and six part-time
workers.
“The people that we hire are going to train at C. Burr Artz and Urbana,”
Dingle said.
PSA-Dewberry, Inc. of Fairfax, Va. designed the new library and Waynesboro
Construction Company, Inc. will build it.
