Thurmont Dispatch
(8/7) Woodsboro Bank opened its newest
branch at 143 Frederick Road in Thurmont on
Aug. 4. The new building’s 2,500 sq. ft. more
than doubles the size of the bank’s previous
location on North Church Street. The opening
coincides with the bank’s 15-year anniversary
of service to Thurmont and northern Frederick
County. Prior to its relocation, the Thurmont
branch had been on North Church Street.
C. Richard Miller, Jr., president and CEO
of Woodsboro Bank, said the relocation was
prompted by “increased business volume” at the
branch. “The Thurmont office has consistently
been our most-active branch since it was
established. I attribute this in large part to
Steve Ott, vice president and branch manager,
and his very capable staff.”
Ott believes the financial institution’s
success in Thurmont is due to the community’s
embrace of Woodsboro Bank’s relationship-based
approach to banking. “Our staff is committed
to providing a quality of personal service
that customers really respond to,” said Ott,
who also manages Woodsboro Bank’s branch
banking system. “Our new location, reinforced
with our many new checking products and
services such as mobile banking and remote
deposit capture, markedly improves the bank’s
offerings to private and commercial customers
alike.”
The neo-Federal style brick office,
designed by Proffitt & Associates Architects
and constructed by GRC Contracting, is located
on a parcel adjacent to Mountain Gate Family
Restaurant, owned by the McCleaf family. The
branch, with ample parking, offers four
drive-up window lanes. Other drive-up features
include a dedicated ATM lane as well as
another for night deposits.
Inside, the handicap accessible office
features five teller stations, which Ott said
can all be required at peak banking hours. The
branch also includes a private conference room
large enough to comfortably accommodate eight
people. “The office will celebrate its
northern Frederick County residency with
artwork created by Yemi, an award-winning,
local artist,” noted Ott. Customers entering
the bank vestibule will be greeted by a view
of contemporary downtown Thurmont that has
been faux frosted on the interior doors.
“Yemi, who is a bank customer, wanted to give
the branch a signature work that would serve
as a gift to the staff and our many local
customers,” said Ott. Additionally, the artist
was commissioned by the bank to create an
etched-glass mural depicting regional scenes.
The horizontal, five panel glass etched mural
includes representations of surrounding
Catoctin Mountain orchards, the Catoctin
Colorfest, the historic Catoctin Furnace,
Cunningham Falls, and Camp David. “The mural
captures some of the areas most beloved and
celebrated landmarks,” said Ott.
To address issues of noise and security,
the branch entrance includes an insulated
glass vestibule that will significantly buffer
the din of nearby traffic. Sophisticated
security and sensoring equipment prohibits
entry into the branch or exit to the street,
should the presence of substantial metals be
detected. “State of the art technology has
been integrated into every aspect of the
branch’s construction and daily function,” Ott
said.
