(7/29) After months of research, budgeting, and discussions with local residents, Walkersville commissioners are planning to partner with Cunningham Recreation to complete updates at Creamery Park.
Located across from the Walkersville Public Library, Creamery Park has been around for nearly 35 years. Over time, however, the park--and playground equipment in particular--has become insufficient for the growth of the Walkersville community in this area. Current play equipment was installed in the 90s, and with an increasing number of families moving in and the recent addition of the library, renovation is now a necessity.
"[This project] is really going to give a facelift to the park," said Commissioner Michael Bailey at the July 13 town meeting. "I’m excited to vote yes [to Cunningham Recreation’s bid]."
Much of the excitement surrounding the project comes from its focus on accessibility. The chosen Cunningham Recreation playground design contains a number of inclusive and ADA-compliant elements. One such element is the use of Poured in Place, a rubber mat-like material that allows wheelchair-bound users access to playground equipment, whereas materials like rubber or wood chips prevent access.
In addition, the playground will feature a "Merry-Go-All," a merry-go-round with space for seated and standing passengers. Because of the backed seats, users are easily able to transfer from a wheelchair or other mobility aid to the equipment. At least one "Zero-G" swing will also be available, utilizing a similar backed seat design as well as a brace that acts as a seatbelt.
Commissioner Tom Gilbert recommended that the town allow flexibility for the project budget, making a motion to approve up to a $325,000 bid from Cunningham Recreation. The motion was passed unanimously.
In addition to playground equipment, commissioners are also considering renovations of restroom facilities at Creamery Park. In the recently-reviewed parks development survey, one of the top requests from residents was to update restroom facilities at all Walkersville parks. Currently, restrooms at Creamery Park are closed, but installment of a new playground and projected influx of families to the park may necessitate that they be open. If this is the case, commissioners are also discussing the inclusion of changing tables.
Initial stages of renovation at the park are already complete, with the parking lot recently repaved and a playground design already approved. However, it will take much more planning before construction can begin and the new playground may not be seen for several months or even years. In any case, it will provide the families of Walkersville with a safe, durable, and fun gathering place.
