(4/24) The Woodsboro American Legion, will hold the annual community Memorial Day Services and Parade on May 29th. Everyone is invited to join in on reflective day with the community to honor those who paid the ultimate price for their country, Parade Chair Michael Strausbough said.
A wreath laying ceremony will begin at noon at the Main Street War Memorial at the north end of town hosted by the Sons of the American Legion and will raise the flag to half-staff.
The annual parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery and continue down Main Street to Coppermine Road then down Second Street.
Following the parade, at approximately 2:45 p.m., the American Legion will hold a joint Memorial Service at the Legion Home located at 101 West Elizabeth Street on the hill behind Trout’s Market. The service will include the history of the memorial, as well as guest speakers and demonstrations, Strausbough said.
"For a small town, it is a good size parade, and it is always a huge turn out because we are the only Memorial Day parade in Frederick County," he said.
The Woodsboro Memorial Day parade has been an annual tradition for 150 years and it has been hosted by the American Legion for over 50 years, according to Strausbough.
The parade will be led by community veterans and will feature floats from local businesses and churches, custom cars, fire trucks, state police armored vehicles, honor guards, marching bands, and Scouts, he said.
"It will have everything you can think of for each small-town parade," he said.
This year, the Legion is also ecstatic to host 102-year-old Battle of the Bulge veteran James Deary to ride along in the parade. "It is an honor to have him with us this year. He is as sharp as a tack," he said.
The event is held on Sunday so that Memorial Day Monday may be spent with loved ones, according to Strausbough.
