He enlisted at the age of 17 years as a private
with Company C, First Regiment, Cole's Maryland Volunteer
Cavalry on October 7, 1862, and was discharged on June 28th,
1865. He was living with his parents
in the George Weikert
house on the Battlefield at the time of enlistment.
He was the father of Samuel D.
Weikert, Steinwehr Ave., the
grandfather of Bernard Weikert and Mrs. Edith Weikert Tawney,
Gettysburg; the great grandfather of William Ziegler,
Gettysburg Rd.; Robert Ziegler, Gettysburg, and Mrs. Mary
