Full Moon:
The Full Moon in October will occur on
October 10th and is considered the Hunter's
Moon for 2003. Also known as Yellow Leaf
Moon because of all of the leaves turning
colors at this time of year and the Cree
Indian Tribe called it the Moon of Falling
Leaves.
Special Notes:
In October, 1517, Martin Luther posted his
95 Theses on the Wittenberg Palace church
door, marking the start of the Protestant
Reformation. Panic broke out on October 30,
1938 after the radio play, "The War of the
Worlds" was broadcast on CBS. Realistic news
reports led many to believe that Martians
were actually invading the earth. Don't
forget to "fall back" one hour on Sunday,
October 26th at 2AM EDT as Daylight Savings
ends for 2003.
Holidays: Yom
Kipper begins its observance on October 6th
and Columbus Day is celebrated on Monday,
October 13th. United Nations Day falls on
Friday, October 24th. The children's
favorite holiday next to Christmas is
Halloween is on Friday, October 31st. Be
sure to Trick or Treat early and finish by
dusk. Have older children carry flashlights
and wear reflective clothing if they are
planning to be out after dark.
The Garden:
Start raking those leaves now! Shredding
leaves, along with lawn clippings, make a
fine addition to your compost heap. Remove
all dead vines and spent plants from your
vegetable garden. Mix 1 can of cola (not
diet), 1 cup of dish soap, and ¼ cup of
ammonia and add to 20-gallon hose end
sprayer and fill to top. Saturate the layer
of mulch that's left on top of the garden's
soil and then say, "Good Night" until the
next growing season!
