September 2007

"I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand;
that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man
an opportunity to make a living".
                        John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937)

Weather Watch: Mild showers and Storms (1,2) with fair and mild weather to follow (3,4,5,6). Warmer and more humid (7,8,9,10), returning to fair and mild temperatures (11,12,13,14). Warmer with scattered showers (15,16,17,18) with Storms and cooler temperatures (19,20,21,22). Fair and mild (23,24,25) and turning warmer and more humid (26,27,28,29,30).

Tornado Watch: Watch for tornado activity in the Mid-Atlantic Region from September 16th to the 18th.

Full Moon: September's full moon is most famously known as Harvest Moon. It is the full moon that falls closest to the Autumnal Equinox at a time when the moon rises soon after sunset on several successive days. According to tradition, the extra light from the moon during that period gave the farmer more time to finish up his chores and bring in the harvest. For 2007, the Autumnal Equinox occurs at 4:51AM EST on Sunday, September 23rd. The closest Full Moon occurs on September 26th at 2:45 pm and is therefore, the Harvest Moon of 2007. It has also been referred to as Full Wort Moon. The word "wort" originates from the Old English word, wyrt, which refers to plants, particularly herbs. Witches and natural healers would gather herbs at this time of year, stocking up for the Winter months ahead.

Special Notes: We must never forget those who tragically lost their lives on 9/11/2001. Be sure to also say a prayer for the many fallen firefighters, police, and EMT personnel who willingly gave their lives trying and save others. We all owe them and their families a huge debt of gratitude. Remember that every day our lives depend upon these skilled, courageous, and committed individuals, many who are volunteers, to help keep us all safe and sound.

Holidays: In 2007, Labor Day falls on the first Monday, September 3rd and Citizenship Day is on Monday, September 17th. Religious holidays observed this month include Ramadan, which begins on September 12th, Rosh Hashanah on September 13th, and Yom Kippur on September 22nd.

The Garden: Remember that Fall is for planting! Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips after the first hard frost. Cool-season vegetable seeds and seedlings can be planted, too. Try cabbage, lettuce, beets, turnips, spinach, radishes, collards and broccoli; be sure to water thoroughly after planting. Plant new trees and shrubs now, to give them at least 6 weeks before the first frost. Start moving houseplants indoors.
