February 2008

"You can fool some of the people all of the time,
and all of the people some of the time,
but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
                  Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

Weather Watch: Fair and not as cold (1,2,3). Some light snow (4,5) followed by fair and colder temperatures (6,7,8). Periods of snow flurries (9,10,11,12) with fair weather returning but quite cold (13,14,15). Periods of light snow (16,17,18,19) turning fair and remaining cold (20,21,22). Snow showers (23,24,25,26) then fair weather and rather cold temperatures to end the month (27,28,29).

Tornado Watch: The Almanack sees no tornado activity in the Northeastern Region for the month of February.

Full Moon: February's Full Moon has become often called the Hunger Moon because of the great difficulty in finding food at this time of the year, partly due to increased amounts of snow on the ground. Because of this, it has also been referred to as the Snow Moon. February's Full Moon will occur on February 20th at 10:30 PM.

Special Notes: Be sure to wear adequate sunscreen and eyewear for the winter activity of your choice. The Battle Hymn of the Republic, a poem by Julia Ward Howe was first published in The Atlantic Monthly on February 1st, 1862.

Holidays: "Punxsutawney Phil" will make his famous and much anticipated prediction on the coming of Spring on Saturday, February 2nd. It is also Candelmas Day, the Christian festival of lights The day was marked by the present of many more candles then usual at mass services. Not only did the candles provide light but also it was truly believed in early times, that they warded off illness and plague in the coming year. Shrove Tuesday, February 5th marks the beginning of Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday follows on February 6th. Valentine's Day falls on Thursday, February 14th. Do something really special for your sweetheart. Birthdays of Washington and Lincoln which both fall in this month are remembered on President's Day, Monday, February 18th.

The Garden: Keep tabs on your houseplants. Make sure they are getting enough humidity. Start feeding them again once they begin to show signs of new growth. Dig vegetable plots, if not completed. Use well decomposed garden compost. Be sure to give your asparagus beds an extra covering of that rich compost. Even though the weather can be quite wet, shrubs may still need watering if they are protected by overhangs from the rain. Be sure the temperature is well above freezing. And please, remember to feed the birds!

J. Grubers' Thought for Today's Living:

"There is no disposition more agreeable to the person himself and others then good humor."
